Pullman is located in the southeastern corner of Washington and lies in the heart of the Palouse prairie, a region of extraordinary beauty distinguished by rolling, dune-like hills. Opportunities for world-class mountaineering, rafting, backpacking, fishing, skiing, camping, mountain biking, and other activities abound. Within easy reach are multiple mountain ranges (two notable ranges are the Wallowa and Blue Mountains), numerous lakes (Lake Coeur d'Alene, Lake Pend Orielle, Priest Lake), large rivers such as the Columbia, Snake, Salmon, and Clearwater, and an extraor dinarily high number of national and state parks. Washington State University is a member of the Pac-10 Athletic Conference and competes in sports ranging from football and basketball to swimming and golf.
